EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LOUISA FALKENBERG

March 6th, 2024

In a recent interview with Louisa Falkenberg, the creative force behind the instagram account Why Less is Not More and a rising star in the world of interior design, we delve into her journey from Instagram enthusiast to establishing her own blog and making waves in the design industry. Join our conversation where we talk about how to get the boutique hotel feeling at home. Louisa shares valuable and concrete tips on how to get there!

"It wasn't long ago that my fiancé spontaneously suggested I share all the beautiful images and inspiration I saved and daydreamed about every day," Louisa recalls when asked about the genesis of her blog. "Taking him up on the idea, I started an Instagram account with no grand expectations. I began sharing everything that caught my eye, from the grand to the humble, without pretense. To my delight, the account gained significant traction, growing by 400-500 followers daily. Since then, one thing has led to another. I began collaborating with ELLE, engaging in numerous partnerships, and currently, I'm working on launching my own platform."

" I'm a fan of markets and antique finds. I spend hours each week scouring auction sites, with Catawiki being a personal favorite for its unique finds and reasonable prices."

You've emphasized the significance of incorporating patterns in various elements of a room, like rugs, pillows, and curtains. What advice would you offer to beginners looking to achieve a harmonious atmosphere?

Introduce patterns one room at a time. Find an item, whether a pillow, pouf, or artwork, that stands out from the room's color palette. A single standout piece can set the tone, allowing other elements to remain calm and neutral.

I really appreciate the decorative details in your interior design, from elegant tableware to bowls with unique character. Could you share some of your sources of inspiration when it comes to making such purchases?

I love decor characterized by elegant serveware and bowls with unique characters. My inspiration comes from strong women worldwide, often finding their homes equally inspiring. Instagram is my go-to for inspiration. Additionally, I'm a fan of markets and antique finds. I spend hours each week scouring auction sites, with Catawiki being a personal favorite for its unique finds and reasonable prices.

I am curious, what is your process when you decorate a room?

I approach room design as if it was a painting, always striving for harmony and balance. Every room should have a focal point. If there's a standout feature, such as a ceiling mural in my hallway, other elements must complement it without overwhelming the space. I opt for neutral furnishings with rich textures to contrast with harder elements. Each room should have its own 'star,' with supporting elements playing a background role. Don't tackle every room at once; creating a personal home takes time.
