Reviving Heritage: A Family-Led Journey of Architectural Restoration with Berrow Projects
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE BERROW FAMILY

April 12th, 2024

Nestled in the quaint town of Sóller, Mallorca, Berrow Projects is more than just a design-build team; it's a family legacy of breathing new life into historical properties while preserving their innate charm. Founded by siblings Archie and Monty, Berrow Projects intertwines a deep-rooted passion for architecture with a commitment to sustainable development. In an exclusive interview, we delve into the captivating narrative behind Berrow Projects, their meticulous approach to design, and their unwavering dedication to the local community.

From Family Passion to Architectural Legacy

Berrow Projects, a family-led architectural design-build team based in Sóller, has become synonymous with the art of reviving historical properties with a modern twist. Founded by siblings Archie and Monty, the journey of Berrow Projects is deeply rooted in their upbringing. "Our parents were a key influence on us and gave invaluable advice on the process and also design," Monty shares, highlighting the familial inspiration that ignited their passion for restoration.

Their foray into the world of architectural restoration began with a single derelict townhouse purchased by Archie in 2018. Initially conceived as a personal project, the transformation of this property sparked a realization—they had discovered their calling. "By the end of the project, we were borrowing most of the art and furniture to get us over the line and ready for sale," reminisces Monty. From that pivotal moment, Berrow Projects was born, evolving into a multidisciplinary team encompassing architects, designers, marketers, and administrators.

Balancing History and Modern Luxury

Central to Berrow Projects' ethos is the meticulous selection of properties that possess a unique character and historical significance. "Most of the projects we buy are barely inhabitable by modern standards," explains Monty. "We love projects where the architectural features have been left untouched for decades, maybe centuries." This intrinsic connection to the past fuels their approach, balancing the preservation of heritage with the infusion of modern luxury.

Preserving the Soul of Sóller, One Project at a Time

Mon Cor, one of their notable projects, epitomizes this fusion of history and contemporary design. Built in 1903 by a wealthy French family, Mon Cor stood as a testament to early 20th-century living. "One of the big challenges was replacing the structural elements while keeping the original features intact," recalls Archie. Through meticulous craftsmanship and a profound respect for the property's heritage, Mon Cor was reborn—a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern elegance.

Drawing Inspiration from Tradition: Sóller's Influence on Design and Renovation

The town's heritage and architecture are key influences on our approach to development, emphasizing our ambition to protect the town's heritage, elevate its architecture, and celebrate the local community.

Berrow Projects' Vision for the Future

For now, we are very focused on the North-West region of Mallorca and have several projects in the pipeline in the towns of Sóller, Valldemossa, Port de Sóller, and Fornalutx.

"We are not only committed to building homes in this region but also having a positive impact on the local community and improving the hospitality offering here through our other businesses in the area."

Community Engagement Beyond Construction: The Berrow Projects Initiative

We also operate the Sóller Tennis Club and are gently developing it into a one-of-a-kind destination where tennis, padel, and swimming are meters away from a relaxed restaurant and panoramic views across the UNESCO World Heritage Serra de Tramuntana. It is an unpretentious non-members club where people can indulge in wellness and connect with the Soller community. Our family also started Patiki Beach restaurant in Port de Sóller 5 years ago, a farm-to-table concept on the beach.

A Family Affair: Collaborating and Growing Together

Archie and I work very closely together every day, our offices are shared and all the key decisions are discussed and made together. We are very lucky to have different and complementary skill sets so it works well. Our dynamic partnership allows us to approach projects from multiple angles, leveraging our respective strengths. Working alongside family brings a unique level of trust and understanding, which helps us navigate challenges and celebrate successes with a shared sense of purpose.

In conclusion, collaborating with family businesses like Berrow Projects, akin to Juniper, adds a unique sense of companionship and shared purpose to our work. As they continue shaping Mallorca's architectural landscape, their dedication to excellence and heritage preservation remains unwavering. Berrow Projects epitomizes the essence of craftsmanship, innovation, and familial bonds—a testament to the enduring legacy of passion and dedication in the realm of architectural design.
