What is Mulberry Silk and Why Is It So Good for Your Skin?

Short answer: mulberry silk comes from Bombyx mori silkworms raised on a diet of mulberry leaves alone, which produces longer, finer, more even fibres than ordinary silk. That's what gives it its particular softness, sheen and durability, and why it's considered the finest silk available for bedding.

What mulberry silk actually is

Mulberry silk is produced by Bombyx mori silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves. That controlled diet is what makes the difference: it produces long, smooth, durable fibres that spin into a fabric with a distinctive softness and natural sheen, setting it apart from other silks.

Why it costs more than ordinary silk

The price reflects the production, not just the marketing.

What is Mulberry Silk and Why Is It So Good for Your Skin?
  • Source. Mulberry silk comes from silkworms fed only mulberry leaves, producing longer, finer fibres. Ordinary silk comes from silkworms with a more varied diet, which gives coarser, shorter fibres.
  • Quality. Mulberry silk has a smoother texture, a more pronounced sheen, and greater durability than most ordinary silk.
  • Production. Cultivating mulberry leaves and rearing the silkworms carefully adds real complexity and cost that a lower-grade silk skips.

Why it suits skin and hair

Beyond the feel, mulberry silk does real, measurable things for skin and hair overnight.

  • Skin. Its smooth, low-friction surface reduces the sleep creases that turn into lines over time, and it's naturally hypoallergenic, which helps with sensitive skin.
  • Hair. A cotton pillowcase creates friction that can lead to breakage and frizz; silk lets hair glide instead, which means fewer split ends over time.
  • Temperature. Silk adjusts to your body temperature rather than trapping heat, so it works year-round rather than only in one season.
  • Allergies. It naturally resists dust mites and mould, a sound choice if you're allergy-prone.
  • Moisture. Unlike cotton, which draws moisture out of skin and hair overnight, silk helps skin hold on to it, which matters for whatever skincare you put on before bed.
