Short answer: measure your mattress's length, width and depth before buying a fitted sheet, choose between fitted (elastic corners), flat, or envelope-style depending on how you like your bed made, and fold corner-into-corner rather than wrestling with the shape.
Measuring for the right size
Mattress depth matters as much as length and width: a fitted sheet cut for a shallow mattress will pop off the corners of a deeper one. Measure all three before ordering, and size up rather than down if you're between sizes, since a slightly loose fitted sheet is a minor inconvenience and a slightly tight one won't stay on.
Fitted, flat, or envelope
A fitted sheet uses elastic corners to hug the mattress and stay in place through the night, which is what most people default to. A flat sheet sits loose and gets tucked in by hand, which some people prefer for the extra layer between duvet and body. An envelope-style sheet is a middle ground: cut like a flat sheet but with a tuck-in flap at the foot, so it holds its shape better than a plain flat sheet without the elastic corners of a fitted one.
Folding it without a fight
Turn the sheet inside out, tuck one corner inside its diagonal opposite, then do the same with the remaining two corners, so all four nest inside one pocket. What's left is roughly rectangular. Lay it flat, smooth out the elastic edge, and fold into thirds like a flat sheet. It takes a few tries to feel natural, but it stops fitted sheets turning into a drawer of tangled fabric.
