Supima vs. Egyptian Cotton vs. Linen: What Actually Differs
Supima is a certified, DNA-verified cotton. Egyptian cotton isn't regulated at all, and linen trades wrinkle-resistance for breathability. What actually separates the three.
Short answer: Supima is a certified, DNA-verified American cotton with fibres 35% longer than regular cotton, which makes it stronger and softer. Egyptian cotton can be just as good, but the name itself carries no such enforcement, so quality varies by supplier. Linen breathes best of the three but wrinkles the most.
Supima cotton: consistent by certification
Supima is a trademarked cotton grown in the United States, making up less than 1% of the world's cotton production. Its extra-long staple fibres are what set it apart.
- Softness. The long fibres give a noticeably smoother, more luxurious feel than regular cotton.
- Durability. Supima runs up to 45% stronger than regular cotton, which is why it resists pilling and holds its softness over years rather than months.
- Colour retention. The fibres take dye more evenly, so colour stays vivid wash after wash rather than fading.
Egyptian cotton: genuinely luxurious, inconsistently labelled
Egyptian cotton, traditionally grown along the Nile, is known for long, fine fibres that make a soft, breathable fabric. The catch is that the name "Egyptian cotton" isn't a regulated certification the way Supima is, so a product can legally carry the label with as little as 1% genuine Egyptian cotton in the blend.
Genuine Egyptian cotton offers real softness and airflow, and it typically needs gentler washing than more robust fibres. The practical takeaway: if you're buying Egyptian cotton, look for a supplier who can actually verify the source, since the label alone doesn't guarantee it.
Linen: the breathable, textured option
Linen is made from flax, and it's known for durability, breathability and a texture unlike either cotton option.
- Breathability. Excellent moisture-wicking makes it a strong choice for hot sleepers.
- Durability. Linen fibres are inherently strong, which makes for a long-lasting fabric.
- Texture. Crisp and textured to start, softening with wear over time.
The trade-off is that linen wrinkles easily and can feel rough before it's broken in, which isn't to everyone's taste.
Which to choose, by priority
- Sleep hot? Linen breathes best of the three, being naturally moisture-wicking.
- Sensitive skin? Supima's long, smooth fibres are gentler and less likely to irritate than coarser weaves.
- Sustainability matters to you? Supima is grown under strict environmental standards; linen comes from flax, a low-impact, fast-growing plant. Both are reasonable choices on that front.
- Everyday, frequent use? Supima's strength and pilling resistance make it the practical choice for bedding that gets washed often.
- Want the most consistent luxury feel? Both genuine Supima and genuine Egyptian cotton feel wonderful, but Supima's regulated US sourcing means what you buy is what you get, every time.
