Why You Should Sleep with a Silk Sleep Mask – 5 Key Benefits

Less light, no morning creases, and moisture that stays on your skin instead of soaking into the mask. Why the material actually matters for something worn against your face all night.

Why You Should Sleep with a Silk Sleep Mask – 5 Key Benefits

Short answer: a silk sleep mask blocks light for genuinely uninterrupted sleep while being gentle on the delicate skin around your eyes, unlike synthetic masks that press creases into skin overnight and pull at eyelashes and hair.

Why the material matters here more than most

The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than anywhere else on the face, so what sits against it all night matters. A smooth, low-friction fabric like mulberry silk moves with your face rather than pressing into it, which means fewer sleep creases by morning and less pulling on lashes or hair at the edge of the mask.

Made the way our silk always is

Our Silk Sleep Mask is 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk, the highest quality grade, made using peace silk: the silkworms are left to fully mature and leave their cocoons naturally, rather than being harvested inside them, so the process is genuinely cruelty-free. The factory uses every part of the cocoon it can, including the outer layers and leftover fibres, to keep waste down.

Caring for it

Treat it the same as our silk pillowcases: wash it roughly every two weeks, separately from other laundry, either by hand in a fabric bag or in the machine with no spin cycle, and never in the tumble dryer.

Made in Portugal, and made to be worn every night, not just packed for travel occasionally.

Questions answered

Is a silk sleep mask better than a cotton or synthetic one?
Yes, meaningfully. Cotton and synthetic fabrics create more friction against skin and can leave sleep creases, and cotton also absorbs moisture that would otherwise stay on your skin. Silk glides rather than catches, does not draw moisture away, and is naturally hypoallergenic. For seven to nine hours of nightly contact against your face, that difference adds up.
Can a sleep mask damage your skin?
A poorly made one can: a tight elastic strap combined with a rough fabric is what actually causes creases, through pressure and friction together. A well-fitted silk mask does the opposite, reducing pressure on the delicate eye area and minimising the friction that causes creasing overnight.
What momme weight should a silk sleep mask be?
A substantial weight matters for both durability and feel. Ours is 28 momme Grade 6A mulberry silk, chosen for a smooth, dense hand-feel that holds up over years of nightly use.
Does a silk sleep mask help you sleep better?
Yes, in two ways. It dims light enough to support your body's own melatonin production, and the smooth, temperature-regulating fabric keeps you comfortable rather than overheating, which together support deeper, more consistent sleep.
